While checking out the Fierce50 bloggers I soon realized they may have made a mistake including me. Little did I know the day would turn out to be an unforgettable afternoon of smiles, laughs, a white top and the bonding of new girl-friend-ships.
A few weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in joining a group of extraordinary women led by a tall, striking, powerhouse, blond dynamo! The group is called Fierce50 and the leader is Catherine Grace O’Connell. Catherine is an accomplished, successful blogger whose personal story is spellbinding, compassionate and inspirational. Yet she is the one inspired by other women in their second act of life. Catherine’s focus and determination founded Fierce50, which commenced on February 19th, 2017. Bringing together 50 female bloggers over the age of 50 in a celebration of midlife on the 50th day of the year. THAT’S ME!! And guess what? The lights were flickering, indicating my second act was about to start and at 54…it needs to start now.
In addition to partnering with Denise Austin for the One on One Fierce50 interviews, a photoshoot was planned to showcase a small representation of the group. I was asked if I’d like to join. Initially, I was grateful and thrilled to be included, but then second thoughts crept in. Why me? I felt intimidated to be amongst these dialed in fashionista gals. Their blog photos are glossy magazine caliber. They would turn heads if seen walking on the street! Rockin’ it with luxe fabrics, duster coats, cutting edge ensembles, totally put together. To put it mildly, eye popping chic!
Do they know that my closet consists only of BLACK tops and pants that range from jeans to jeans, to a few more jeans. Did I mention jeans? How was I get picked for this? I can only imagine the photos TMZ would take of me at the grocery store if I was famous! Yikes! This is where I began to totally freak out because Chico’s Girlfriend Jeans afternoon shoot was coming up fashionably fast and furious. Luckily, we all got to choose outfits from Chicos and when the box arrived at my doorstep I put them in my India Hicks bag, ready to go, so I thought…
How could it be the day of the shoot already? The last few hours turned into minutes and uh oh!! My nails! My toes! OMG I totally forgot about my eyebrows! Oh well, get in the car Kathy! Ironically, the minutes quickly turned into back into hours, while stuck in the infamous Los Angeles traffic. I sat on the 405 sweating, my straightened hair stuck to the back of my neck, while my camera ready makeup was covered with beads of sweat from the unpredicted summer heat and a menopause hot flash. Oh the joys! How do Kendal and Kylie Jenner do it? Oh yeah, they have teams of assistants, plus one’s a millennial and the other one is just, well, young!
Cooling down with the A/C blasting I looked at my wrist and saw the #girlfriendbracelet Chico’s sent to all 50 bloggers. I wondered who these girls were? What were their stories? Are they going to notice I’m not a slave to fashion? I bet I’ll be the oldest? Will they become my friends? Is my outfit right? Why did I choose white? Heels…you just had your hips replaced! What was going on, I felt like it was the first day of junior high!!!
I parked my car and grabbed the bag, all while whipping out my powder compact. Patting down the shine and adding some lip gloss, I walked into the little park which sat on a hill overlooking some southern California city. The great thing about GPS is I get there. The bad thing about GPS is I have no idea where “there” is. LOL!
I see the group gathered together, talking, laughing, locked and loaded with the cutest outfits on. From their hair, fancy shades, stilettos, to peek-a-boo shoulder tops, these gals looked stunning. And then…it was no longer about what I saw, but what I heard. “Hi, are you Kathy?” It was so sweet, so kind, so friendly. We instantly bonded. Sharing our bracelets, learning where we all were from, introducing our blogs, our businesses and our families. Ultimately, agreeing and reaffirming we are cool, hip, strong women who have all come a long way and ferociously ready for the second act!
These gals had the looks and the cat walk down pat! We strutted in heels through the woods and climbed a tree showing off the latest of Chico’s fashions. For me, it was hilarious pretending to be a fierce model for an afternoon…unforgettable! And I wore white! #doublehipreplacement
As the afternoon sun began to approach the Pacific Ocean, I relished in the moment. I had just spent the most wonderful afternoon with women I will continue to admire for a very, very long time. Thank you Catherine and all my new blogger buddies. You guys seriously rock the internet. Love you gals!

And speaking of being thankful, I’ve been told that in 2017, a more alternative fashion option is trending, season-less-clothes. Jumping for joy, because the next time you see me I’ll be rocking my jeans, a black vintage tee with a NorthFace down puffer vest cinched with a fanny pack. Yes a fanny pack, Karl Lagerfeld debuted one this year.
Moral of the story…it’s what’s inside that counts.
Be kind to all,
